Our purpose is to ‘Positively impact the wellbeing of New Zealanders’

One of the key focus areas of our purpose is environmental wellbeing. We believe the growing impact of climate change is the single biggest issue facing our planet and the wellbeing of New Zealanders. Therefore, decreasing greenhouse gases and preparing our businesses and communities for the current and future effects of climate change is critical.

As part of our commitment to the environment, we began a series of initiatives in 2021 to reduce Ando’s greenhouse gas emissions and raise awareness amongst our staff, customers, partners, and supply chain to also take action.

Turning the corner to a greener future

As an insurance business, our environmental impact is fairly low, however we do provide cover for private and commercial vehicles. In total, the transport sector contributes approximately 40% of Aotearoa’s CO2 emissions1, and whilst we know that more sustainable technology for transport is coming, we can’t sit idle until then. To help absorb CO2 emissions from the transport sector, Trees for Transport are planting native trees along walking and cycling trails around the country with our charity partner Trees That Count. Even when carbon-based fuels are long a thing of the past, the trees planted today will continue to enrich ecosystems, purify the air we breathe and beautify our natural surrounds for future generations to explore and enjoy.

Reducing our carbon footprint

We are committed to helping New Zealand transition to a low-carbon & climate resilient future. We report our Scope 1Scope 2 and Scope 3  greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually and have adopted emissions reduction targets for Scope 1 & 2.

In FY23, we began offsetting 100% of our Scope 1 & 2 emissions.

Our pledge

We aim to reduce our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions in line with the International Panel for Climate Change's (IPCC) 1.5C pathways, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

By 2026, reduce absolute Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 25.2%.

Transforming the way we do business by engaging with key stakeholders to incorporate sustainability principles in our strategy and implement more sustainable practices in our day-to-day operations.

Encouraging and supporting our staff to reduce their impact on the environment at home and in the office.

Engaging with partners and suppliers across our supply chain to influence a reduction in our environmental impact collectively through initiatives such as Trees for Transport.

Working collaboratively to define the role insurance plays in climate adaptation and building climate-resilience in our business.

Adapting to a changing world

The world’s climate is changing at a rate never seen before. As a business that is committed to ‘positively impacting the wellbeing of New Zealanders’, it is our responsibility to ensure we understand how this climate change impacts our ability to operate and create better outcomes for our customers, staff, suppliers, partners, and community.

That is why we have begun the process of identifying and assessing our climate-related risks, to understand how climate change may impact our business in the short, medium, and long-term so that we may continue to help New Zealanders.
