Our purpose is to ‘Positively impact the wellbeing of New Zealanders’
One of the key focus areas of our purpose is environmental wellbeing. We believe the growing impact of climate change is the single biggest issue facing our planet and the wellbeing of New Zealanders. Therefore, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing our businesses and communities for the current and future effects of climate change is critical.
As part of our commitment to the environment, we began a series of initiatives in 2021 to reduce Ando’s greenhouse gas emissions and raise awareness amongst our staff, customers, partners and supply chain, to also take action.
Turning the corner to a greener future
Ando’s direct environmental impact is fairly low, however we provide insurance to clients who have private and commercial vehicles. In total, the transport sector contributes approximately 43% of Aotearoa’s energy sector CO2-e emissions1, and whilst we know that more sustainable technology for transport is coming, we can’t sit idle until then. To help absorb CO2 emissions from the transport sector, Trees for Transport are planting native trees along walking and cycling trails around the country with our charity partner Trees That Count. Even when carbon-based fuels are long a thing of the past, the trees planted today will continue to enrich ecosystems, purify the air we breathe and beautify our natural surrounds for future generations to explore and enjoy.

Reducing our carbon footprint
We are committed to helping New Zealand transition to a low-carbon and climate resilient future. In addition, we recognise the importance of measuring our own emissions to understand where we can optimise our business operations and reduce emissions. We report our Scope 1 , Scope 2 and Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually and have adopted an emissions reduction target for Scope 1 & 2.
In FY23, we began offsetting 100% of our Scope 1 & 2 emissions and have continued this in FY24.
Our pledge
We aim to reduce our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions in line with the International Panel for Climate Change's (IPCC) 1.5C pathways, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
By 2026, reduce absolute Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 25.2%.

Ando's Total Emissions
(Scope 1, 2 & 3)
We acknowledge that our current total emissions are increasing year-on-year, due to post Covid travel and the growing nature of our business. Travel is essential for some of our team in order to maintain and develop key business relationships. However, we closely monitor the impact of travel related emissions and evaluate ways to travel more efficiently.
Here is an outline of some of the things we are currently doing.
How we’re going to do it
To reach our target we are focusing on:Transforming the way we do business by engaging with key stakeholders to incorporate sustainability principles in our strategy and implement more sustainable practices in our day-to-day operations.
Encouraging and supporting our staff to reduce their impact on the environment at home and in the office. Empowering staff to make positive changes by providing opportunities to learn through interactive activities and by inviting engaging speakers to share ideas.
Engaging with partners and suppliers across our supply chain to influence a reduction in our environmental impact collectively through initiatives such as Trees for Transport.
Sustainability in action
Fareshare initiative reduces our commuters’ carbon footprint
We are proud to be an early adopter of Auckland Transport’s Fareshare initiative, where we subsidise Auckland Public Transport bus, train and ferry services by 25% for employees with a registered AT HOP card. The feedback from our staff has been overwhelmingly positive, appreciating the subsidy, the ease of the sign-up process and the knowledge that they are doing something tangible for the environment by choosing to take public transport. We hope to see other New Zealand businesses join us in promoting sustainable behaviours. Read more >
Moving to a fleet of low-emission vehicles
In 2024, we started transitioning our lease fleet vehicles from petrol to low-emission cars to meet our Scope 1 & 2 emissions target. In addition to the phasing out of petrol cars, our fleet now includes battery electric and petrol hybrids, allowing for travel in busy city centres and to the furthest corners of New Zealand.

Adapting to a changing world
The world’s climate is changing at a rate never seen before. As a business that is committed to ‘positively impacting the wellbeing of New Zealanders’, it is our responsibility to ensure we understand how this climate change impacts our ability to operate and create better outcomes for our customers, staff, suppliers, partners and community.
That is why we have begun the process of identifying and assessing our climate-related risks, to understand how climate change may impact our business in the short, medium and long-term so that we may continue to help New Zealanders.
Creating a climate-resilient future requires co-operation across the New Zealand insurance industry and wider New Zealand business community. Since 2023, we’ve been part of the Insurance Council of New Zealand’s Climate Change Committee and the Sustainable Business Council’s Climate Adaptation Community of Practice, to help define the role insurance plays in climate adaptation and to strengthen our business’s climate resilience.
